Phil Jones

In Memoria

August 8, 1949 - June 11, 2018

Phillip Jones Sr, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away in Spokane, WA at the age of 68 on June 11, 2018, surrounded by his family. Growing up in Oklahoma, in a musical household, Phil’s love of music, food, football, aviation, and travel were developed in his childhood. He attended, played football for, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma’s (Boomer Sooner!) Air Force ROTC program. In the Air Force, Phil first realized his dream of being a pilot, and flew C-141 aircraft in Vietnam, Grenada, and Desert Storm. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the Air Force, and enjoyed a career flying for Flying Tigers, and later, Federal Express where he spent the rest of his career flying the Airbus and Boeing aircraft all over the world, including Asia, where he lived and flew in his later years with FedEx. His love of aviation touched many people as he mentored many pilots, including his sons, throughout his career. His generosity and love of sharing his experiences will be carried on in the people he touched. He is survived by his wife, Tess Jones, and children and their spouses Inga Stoa, Tyler Sanders, Phil Jones, Jr., William Jones, and Anna Jones. Phil is also survived by his grandchildren Mary, Caroline, Elizabeth, Ava, Nicholas, Kate, and Marshall.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 15, at 3pm at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 316 E 24th Ave, Spokane, WA 99203, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) or  St. Jude’s of Memphis in Phil’s name.

Phil was hired by FTL on 12/1/1976.  He was a respected pilot and flight instructor throughout his career with Tigers and FedEx.
