Al Lopez

In Memoriam

August 1, 1932 - September 7, 2022

It's with deep sadness we relay the news Captain Al Lopez flew west September 7, 2022. He had celebrated his 90th birthday the month before.

Al was hired by Flying Tigers in 1955, as a flight engineer, at 23 years old. During his career, he flew DC-6s, Lockheed Constellations, CL-44s, B-707s, DC-8s, and B-747s.  He also served as the ALPA Captain rep for the LAX council.

Al suffered his third stroke at the end of August.  On September 1, while on life support and unable to talk, he remembered it was the opening day for the San Diego reunion registration. He wrote on a whiteboard he planned to attend, and specified the correct dates of the reunion.  It was one of the last cogent thoughts he was able to express.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Shirley Lopez at

8525 E. 152nd Lane
Brighton, CO 80602;

and, his children, Guy (Toni) Lopez, Deanna (Mike) Haas, Leslie Waterstreet; and numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

No services are planned.
